Karl Wood - Experienced HR Director & Author
Karl Wood is a Global HR Director, author of If Bears Did Leadership, and founder of WINC HR.
With over 30 years of experience in hospitality, he works with leaders and organisations to turn people strategy into practical, everyday leadership that drives performance, retention, and guest experience.
His work focuses on what leadership looks like in reality. Not theory. Not complexity. But the small, consistent choices that shape culture, performance and trust over time.
How I Think About Leadership
The ideas behind If Bears Did Leadership are grounded in simple, observable behaviours.
Leadership is rarely defined by big moments. It is built in the everyday. In how people show up, how they respond under pressure, and how consistently they lead when no one is watching.
Across hotels, teams and global environments, the pattern is always the same. The strongest leaders are not the loudest. They are the most consistent.
That belief sits at the centre of everything I do.
From Insight to Practice
That thinking shapes the way I work today across both global HR leadership and ongoing thought leadership.
In my global role, I focus on building clarity, consistency and practical frameworks that support performance across regions.
Alongside this, WINC HR is my platform for sharing practical insight, tools and thinking on leadership and people strategy in hospitality.
HR Horizons, my weekly newsletter, focuses on the realities of leadership, culture and managing people in fast paced environments.
Across all of this, the focus is the same. Keep it practical. Keep it human. Make it usable.

If Bears Did Leadership
The Book explores twelve leadership themes through the lens of calm, consistent, everyday behaviour.
It is not a book about theory. It is about what people recognise in real leaders. Presence. Trust. Judgement. Consistency.
Each theme ends with a simple cycle of reflection, thinking, action, and rest. Not as a model to follow, but as a way to pause and apply what matters.
The intention is simple. Leadership that feels real, grounded and possible to live every day.
-

12 core themes
At its heart are twelve core leadership themes including authenticity, courage, empathy, accountability, resilience and influence. Each theme is explored through metaphor, reflection and practical prompts designed to help leaders pause and think more deliberately about how they show up.
-

human centred leadership
The book explores what calm, steady and human-centred leadership looks like in practice. It challenges the assumption that authority must be forceful or performative, and instead argues that consistency, clarity and character are what sustain trust over time.

The Bear
The intention is not to offer abstract theory. It is to provide accessible, grounded insight that leaders can apply immediately in real workplace contexts. The bear imagery serves as a reminder that strength and steadiness are not opposites. They coexist.

Experience
I have spent over three decades working across the hospitality industry in the UK, Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia.
Opening hotels. Leading teams. Navigating complex environments where pace, pressure and people all intersect.
That experience shapes how I see leadership. Not as a concept, but as something tested every day in real operational settings.
